Sean Strickland reclaimed the UFC middleweight title Saturday night in Newark, handing Khamzat Chimaev his first professional loss by split decision and ending an undefeated run that had stood at 15-0. The scorecards read 48-47, 47-48, 48-47 — competitive enough that the crowd was still processing the outcome when the result was announced. Main Event: Strickland Ends Chimaev's Undefeated Run
The fight split cleanly into two narratives. Chimaev's wrestling was as dangerous as advertised — he took Strickland down within 15 seconds of the opening round, held back control with hooks in and threatened submissions, then repeated the pattern in Round 4 with another takedown and thigh knees from a body lock. His grip on the grappling side of the fight was real.
Round 2 was where the title changed hands. Chimaev shot twice in quick succession. Strickland stuffed both attempts, reversed position, and held side control for the remainder of the frame. Two of three judges gave that round to Strickland. That single swing was decisive on the cards.
Strickland's jab did the rest. He used it all night to interrupt Chimaev's entries, and by Round 3 it had broken Chimaev's nose. "That motherf***er would not go back," Strickland said afterward. "I'm hitting him with everything and he just keeps coming forward." Chimaev faded in Round 5 while Strickland stayed disciplined behind his jab. The final bell produced a contested reaction from the crowd before the split verdict was read.
In the Octagon, Strickland delivered a post-fight moment that was completely in character: "I just want to apologize to my American fans, to my Muslim fans, and my Christian fans" — a wry reference to the months of inflammatory buildup between the two fighters.
Chimaev takes his first professional loss after more than a decade undefeated. He faces a recalibration of both his ranking position and the unbeaten aura that was central to his identity as a fighter.
Co-Main Event: Van Finishes Taira in Round 5
The flyweight title fight ran into the championship round and paid off. Taira controlled the opener with calf kicks and multiple takedowns to mount. Van answered in Round 2 with a right hand that floored the challenger, then spent the middle rounds trading damage — Taira surviving multiple knockdowns in Round 3 before securing his own takedowns in Round 4 to keep the outcome in doubt heading into the final frame.
Van ended it at 1:32 of Round 5. Body shots staggered Taira, and the follow-up punch combination brought the stoppage. The bout earned Fight of the Night honors and Van immediately called out Alexandre Pantoja for a rematch. It was the first UFC flyweight title fight contested between two Asian-born fighters.
Brady Handles Buckley
Sean Brady needed a bounce-back after a TKO loss to Michael Morales, and he delivered a thorough one. He swept the scorecards 30-25, 30-25, 30-27, taking Buckley down in every round, transitioning through back control into mount, and landing sustained ground-and-pound throughout. Buckley's lone moment of initiative in Round 2 — surging upright to throw punches — ended immediately when Brady pulled him back to the mat. Buckley had stated publicly before the fight that the loser should expect a UFC release.
Prelim Standouts
Jim Miller fought in front of his New Jersey home crowd and submitted Jared Gordon with a guillotine choke at 3:29 of Round 1. When Gordon caught one of Miller's body kicks and shot for a takedown, Miller transitioned directly into the choke and held it until the tap. Miller earned a Performance of the Night bonus — his 47th trip to the Octagon ended with $100,000 in his pocket and another first-round finish on his record.
Yaroslav Amosov, former Bellator welterweight champion, took the other Performance of the Night bonus by submitting Joel Álvarez with an arm-triangle choke at 1:13 of Round 2. He opened the second round with a kick to Álvarez's jaw, traded counters, then dumped him with a takedown and locked the choke in one connected sequence. Back-to-back submission finishes since joining the UFC.
King Green submitted Jeremy Stephens with a rear-naked choke at 4:20 of Round 1 in Stephens' return from four years in BKFC. Green rocked him early with a left hook, took the fight to the canvas, and finished when Stephens reached for a defensive kimura. Stephens arrived one loss away from the UFC's all-time losses record.
Grant Dawson answered a Round 2 knockdown from Mateusz Rębecki by taking the fight deep — he grabbed Rębecki's back early in Round 3 and finished with a rear-naked choke at 4:42, his seventh UFC submission win. He was visibly emotional in the Octagon after the stoppage.
