Fight Overview
Former long-reigning FNC lightweight champion Francisco 'Croata' Barrio returns to the cage looking to bounce back after losing his title. Initially slated to fight former UFC veteran Rony Jason (who had to withdraw late due to personal reasons but remains the matchup of analysis here), Barrio must prove he still belongs at the top. Both fighters possess elite grappling backgrounds, making this catchweight bout an intriguing chess match of high-level submissions and cage control.
Keys to Victory
Francisco Barrio
- Stick to the wrestling base: Avoid the prolonged striking exchanges that cost him his title against Eskiev; commit fully to chain wrestling.
- Nullify the guard: Close the distance safely and establish heavy top pressure to completely shut down Jason's dangerous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu guard.
- Safe ground-and-pound: Keep exceptional posture control while raining down short, scoring strikes to win rounds without risking submission attempts.
Rony Mariano Bezerra
- Intercept takedowns: Time Barrio's predictable level changes with flying knees or step-in uppercuts to make him pay for shooting.
- Active guard attacks: If taken down, immediately employ an active, attacking guard to sweep or lock in triangle and armbar attempts.
- Maximize length on the feet: Use his reach advantage with stinging straight punches to keep the shorter Barrio at bay and frustrated.
