Tale of the Tape
Result Summary
Kai Asakura stopped Cameron Smotherman by TKO (punches) at 3:09 of round one at UFC Fight Night: Song vs. Figueiredo in Macau on May 30, 2026. Making his return to bantamweight, Asakura established his range quickly and cracked Smotherman with a right hand that left him hurt and backing toward the fence. A sharp left hand put Smotherman on the canvas, and the referee halted the contest as Asakura landed unanswered follow-up punches on the ground. The first-round finish placed the 32-year-old Japanese veteran among the names to watch in the UFC bantamweight division.
Fight Overview
Kai Asakura returns to bantamweight after going 0-2 at flyweight — both losses by second-round submission — seeking to prove his long-range technical striking translates better at 135 pounds against Cameron Smotherman, a heavy-handed knockout artist who has dropped back-to-back UFC decisions but owns a strong finish rate. Asakura's reach advantage and technical striking meet Smotherman's raw power in a bout likely decided inside the distance.
Keys to Victory
Kai Asakura
- Use his reach to land sharp check hooks and keep Smotherman from closing distance cleanly.
- Stay off the fence and avoid clinch exchanges where Smotherman can drag him into grappling.
- Build volume early using his speed advantage to accumulate damage before Smotherman settles into his power shots.
Cameron Smotherman
- Cut off the cage aggressively and back Asakura into corners to negate his reach and movement.
- Walk through jabs and land the counter right hand that can reset the striking exchange in his favor.
- Pursue clinch and dirty boxing exchanges to drain Asakura's energy and set up his knockout power.
