PUGNA AI 3 min read

Quillan Salkilld left no room for debate Saturday night at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas. The Australian lightweight submitted ranked veteran Mateusz Gamrot with a rear-naked choke at 4:25 of round one, extending his streak to four consecutive first-round finishes and announcing himself as a serious contender at 155 pounds. Gamrot, a composed and experienced grappler who had tested himself against top-ten opponents, had no answer for Salkilld's combination of physicality and technical submission work.

Main Event: Salkilld Submits Gamrot

Salkilld came out aggressive, putting pressure on Gamrot from the opening bell and drawing blood early with punches. The early strikes set the tone and unsettled a fighter known for his composure. When the action moved to the ground, Salkilld showed no hesitation. He denied Gamrot's sweep attempt by trapping an arm, transitioned smoothly to the back, and locked in a rear-naked choke with thirty-five seconds remaining in the round. Gamrot tapped. The performance was clinical for a main event debut.

After the fight, Salkilld called for a top-five lightweight opponent. The win extended his streak to four consecutive first-round finishes. At this trajectory, the UFC will have difficulty keeping him out of ranked bouts for much longer.

Co-Main Event: Ferreira Returns

Carlos Diego Ferreira had not competed in over two years before Saturday night. He answered any questions about ring rust inside the first round. Ferreira poured on the pressure against Billy Quarantillo, posting what UFC tracking described as the most significant strike output of his career in round one. He never let up. All three judges scored it 30-27, with Quarantillo unable to impose any of his forward pressure against Ferreira's output. The win puts Ferreira back into relevant conversations at lightweight.

Main Card Highlights

Yadier del Valle was done in thirty-five seconds. The Contender Series graduate landed a short left hand that stopped Darren Elkins cold, ending a UFC career that had spanned a decade. For del Valle, the finish added emphasis to a run that has gathered momentum since his DWCS appearance.

Alexia Thainara picked up the biggest win of her career in the strawweight bout, outworking former ranked contender Amanda Lemos across three rounds for a unanimous decision. Thainara remained unbeaten and showed a complete game against a credible opponent.

Prelim Standouts

Juliana Miller had one of the more technically complete performances of the night. She worked patiently through the first round against Ravena Oliveira before locking in a rear-naked choke at 1:38 of round two, showing the composure to hunt a submission without forcing the issue.

Miles Johns stopped Gianni Vazquez with a first-round TKO at 3:09 in featherweight action. José Luiz earned a notable finish over Louie Sutherland via neck crank in round one — a rare technique that put Luiz back on the heavyweight radar. Diyar Nurgozhay stopped Bruno Lopes with punches at 4:59 of round one in a competitive light heavyweight bout.

Looking Ahead

Saturday's card demonstrated the depth building at lightweight. Salkilld emerges as a credible threat to the top of the division after ending the night of a ranked opponent with precision. Ferreira reminded the division he remains dangerous after more than two years away. For Gamrot, the loss is a significant setback and another rebuild begins. Del Valle and Thainara add two Contender Series products to the active watchlist.
