PFL Rankings Shake-Up After PFL Tampa: Cyborg vs. Vieira
PFL Rankings Shake-Up After PFL Tampa: Cyborg vs. Vieira
The biggest week in PFL in recent memory delivered on multiple fronts. Cris Cyborg closed out her legendary career with a dominant decision win over Ketlen Vieira on Saturday night in Tampa. The main event came with an asterisk — Vieira missed weight by 7.2 pounds, checking in at 152.2 lbs for a women's featherweight title fight, stripping her of any chance to win the belt — but Cyborg made it count anyway. One of the longest-reigning women's champions in MMA walked off the stage in Tampa with a win, capping a career that spanned multiple organizations and multiple titles.
The results from Tampa, combined with the fallout from PFL Charlotte on August 7, rewrote large portions of the PFL rankings. The middleweight and light heavyweight divisions saw the biggest moves.
Biggest Movers
| Fighter | Division | Old Rank | New Rank | Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Simeon Powell | Light Heavyweight | 6 | 2 | +4 |
| Bryan Battle | Middleweight | 8 | 4 | +4 |
| Dalton Rosta | Middleweight | 4 | 7 | −3 |
| Josh Silveira | Middleweight | 6 | 9 | −3 |
| Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov | Light Heavyweight | 2 | 4 | −2 |
| Sergey Bilostenniy | Heavyweight | 1 | 2 | −1 |
| Denis Goltsov | Heavyweight | 4 | 3 | +1 |
| Aaron Jeffery | Middleweight | 7 | 6 | +1 |
Light Heavyweight: A New Name at Number One
The single biggest development in this week's update is the arrival of Antônio Carlos Júnior in the PFL light heavyweight rankings. The former UFC middleweight contender enters at number one contender, directly behind champion Corey Anderson. His move to PFL and his step up to 205 pounds instantly restructures the division's contender picture.
Simeon Powell is the biggest jumper in the division, climbing four spots from sixth to second. His scheduled fight with Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov at Tampa was cancelled before fight night, but Powell's accumulated body of work in the PFL season earns him the step above Yagshimuradov. The cancellation cost Yagshimuradov, who drops two spots from second to fourth.
Luke Trainer won by TKO in the light heavyweight bout at Tampa and stays at number three — his position was already established and the win confirms rather than elevates it. Rob Wilkinson and Rasul Magomedov each slide one spot to accommodate the updated standings above them.
Middleweight: Bryan Battle Punches Through
Bryan Battle turned in a performance that moved the needle. At PFL Charlotte on August 7, Battle defeated Dalton Rosta by split decision in Charlotte, North Carolina. The fight went the full three rounds — judges scored it 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 in Battle's favor — and the result did what results do in PFL: it reshapes the standings.
Battle jumps four spots, from eighth to fourth. That is one of the more dramatic single-fight climbs at PFL middleweight in recent memory. He now sits behind champion Costello van Steenis, newly entered Fabian Edwards at number two, and Impa Kasanganay at number three.
The cost of Battle's rise falls heaviest on Dalton Rosta. Rosta drops from fourth to seventh — a three-spot fall for a man who had been among the top contenders in the division. Josh Silveira also paid for his night in Charlotte. Aaron Jeffery defeated Silveira by unanimous decision, scoring it three rounds to none (30-27 x 3). Silveira drops from sixth to ninth.
Aaron Jeffery climbed one spot to sixth as a direct result of his win. Josh Fremd moved up one spot to eighth after his second-round TKO finish over Jhony Gregory at PFL Charlotte. The middleweight division is the most active in PFL right now and the results show it.
Fabian Edwards's entry at number two as a new addition also compresses the division. Every fighter who was holding a spot in that range has to account for his insertion at the top end of the contender list.
Heavyweight: Minor Calibration
Vadim Nemkov holds the heavyweight title. Oleg Popov stays at number one contender. Sergey Bilostenniy drops one position from first to second — a minor recalibration with no fight outcome driving it. Denis Goltsov climbs one spot from fourth to third. Abraham Bably and Maxwell Djantou Nana each move up one. Two new entrants — Hasan Mezhiev and Eduardo Neves — appear at eight and nine.
Women's Divisions
In women's flyweight, Tatiana Postarnakova climbs one spot to ninth, and Shannon Clark drops one to tenth. The top of the division — Dakota Ditcheva, Liz Carmouche, and Taila Santos holding the first three spots — is unchanged.
The women's featherweight division was the headline in Tampa. Cyborg's win over Vieira will be remembered as a career finale, not a title defense, given Vieira's miss on the scale. The women's featherweight rankings do not move in this cycle.
The Bigger Picture
Cyborg's retirement win in Tampa was the event story of the week. But the ranking consequences from two consecutive August events — Charlotte on August 7 and Tampa on August 22 — have reshaped two major PFL divisions heading into the fall.
Battle is now a legitimate top-four middleweight with the win to back it. Powell sits second in light heavyweight with a path toward the belt. ACJ's arrival at 205 makes the PFL title picture at light heavyweight one of the more compelling fights in the sport to make.
Corey Anderson holds the belt. Antônio Carlos Júnior has just become his most dangerous challenger.
